São Tomé benefits from an exeptional location for the production of cocoa. It is located precisely in the middle of that narrow belt 10° north and south of the Equator where fine flavour cocoa thrives. São Tomé is home to some of the best conditions for the optimum growth of cocoa in terms of temperature, rainfall, humidity, natural shade trees and soil.

The cocoa of São Tomé is a mixture of different sub-varieties, the most important being the Amelonado. The Amelonado is an aromatic Forastero with unique genetic and organoleptic characteristics. Originating from the deep Amazon it was first introduced to the island in the 19th century. Sheltered by the isolation of the island the Amelonado was able to escape a number of epidemics that decimated crops in other countries like its original home country Brazil. This fact and the small production of only 3.000 T/year are the reasons why this sub-variety is considered so rare and exclusive.
